Livorno, sometimes called Leghorn by the English, is the third largest port on the Tyrrhenian Sea coast of Italy, after Genoa to the north and Naples to the south. Until the 15th century, Livorno was just a small fishing village and port of very little importance. The principal Tuscan port at this time was Porta Pisa a bit further to the north. The status of the port of Livorno changed when the Medici rulers of Florence made it the main Mediterranean port for Tuscany.
The Port of Livorno, at the west end of the town, is a multipurpose port where all kinds of cargo can be handled by all kinds of vessels. This includes freight and passenger traffic. The port of Livorno has developed connections with all the major ports in the world. Every year approximately 5000 ships belonging to 200 shipping copanies pass through the port. Every year the port handles 20 million tons of goods.
Thanks to the good connections with its hinterland (Tuscany, Emilia Romagna Umbria and Le Marche) Livorno is able to offer its freight customers a very interesting option to move freight to Corsica or Sardinia.
