On the eastern edge of Andalucia lies the province of Almeria. It takes it's name from it's capital city which lies on the southern coast of the province. Almeria city itself is a pleasant and largely modern city and has a wealth of history to offer, a good selection of art galleries, museums and shops. Throughout the areas there is strong African influence.
Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians already used the anchorage of Almeria for commercial trade. The Port of Almeria, as we now know it, was planned and built in the 19th century. The works started in 1847 and it was finished in 1908.
From the freight ferry port you can transport cargo to North Africa. The freight ferry routes from Almeria include: Almeria - Melilla (Morocco) with Acciona Trasmediterranea, Almeria - Nador (Morocco) with Acciona Trasmediterranea or Almeria - Ghazaouet in Algeria with Acciona Trasmediterranea.
The Port of Almería is located approx. 3 kilometres from exit Nº 438 on the E15/N340 "Mediterranean Highway", which links Barcelona with Malaga, via Valencia, Alicante and Almería. The exit is clearly signposted "Puerto". This access to the port avoids having to cross the City of Almería.
